Geography of France

France - the largest in the territory of a country in Western Europe, an area of 551 500 square kilometers (land area is 545 630 square kilometers). 

France belongs to the Western European States and area ranked first among the Western European countries. France belongs to the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. 

The country is bordered by five countries of the European Union and Switzerland and the Channel Tunnel connecting it with Britain. In the west of France by the Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay and English Channel Strait), and in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. 
 


France in the south is bordered by Spain (border length 623 km) and Andorra (60 km) south-east from Monaco (4.4 km) north-east, with Belgium (620 km) and Luxembourg (73 km), at east of Switzerland (573 km) and Italy (488 km), Germany (451km) to the east and north-east. 

Central France is divided into 22 provinces and four island territories: Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique and Réunion. 

More than 2 million residents live on the French island territories, three-quarters of whom live in the DOM TOM (French departments and island territories). 

France, located in western Europe, has a great geographical diversity. In the north, vast plains stretch. Jura, Vosges, central range, the Alps, a very ancient mountain chain forming the ridge along the entire eastern part of the country. 

Western countries are more gentle and is rich in rivers. Rivers relatively small. For example, Sen, Ionna, Marne and Oise. They flow towards the Atlantic Ocean and English Channel. Rhine flows north, and Sona and Rhone empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
